Sails ball the bait right offshore at Fort Pierce. Balling means that the sails herd the bait fish together into a teeming ball. They stay with the ball, plunging in an out to feed. Multiple sails are caught, it not uncommon to hook two at the same time.

White marlin love this territory. Substantially bigger than sailfish a white marlin is a very aggressive sport fish. Blue marlin are here too. And they can run more than 500 pounds and will definitely tear up tackle. The big bill fish are just part of the story.

Dolphin are numerous on this coast, teasing them out from the patches of floating grass in the Gulf Stream is an art that iOutdoor captains have mastered. Schoolie dolphin are a ball, the big bull dolphin will break your back.

Wahoo are pound for pound one of the great athletes of the Stream. The drag may be snug but you won’t believe how fast a wahoo can strip off your line. Big, smoker kings are caught just off the beach and into the Stream. Yellow fin tuna and amber jacks both hit hard and when they are hooked they run like a rocket Cuda and sharks are numerous.

Bottom fishing for snapper and grouper is extremely productive. The entire area around Fort Pierce is prime deep sea fishing territory. One reason for this is that Twenty or 30 miles south of Fort Pierce the Gulf Stream comes closer to the coast than anywhere else on the eastern seaboard. As it begins to move away from the shore a triangular wedge is formed between the stream and the beach. Every wild thing in the Gulf Stream goes into the wedge to feed.

There are four inlets along this coast. Fort Pierce is central and it is the deepest and most reliable even when the weather kicks up. There are inlets at Jupiter, Stuart and at the far north end, Sebastian. Fishing guides and captains use all four.
